NIFES analyses farmed fish on behalf of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, and, each year, 12,000 farmed fish are checked for illegal and undesirable substances. In the past 12 years, no illegal or undesirable substances have been found in quantities that exceed the maximum limits. NIFES has also conducted baseline studies of North Sea herring, Norwegian spring-spawning herring, Greenland halibut, cod, saithe, haddock and mackerel, in addition to monitoring wild salmon. On average, there are low levels of undesirable substances in the fillets from these species.
