Aquaculture plays an important role in ensuring a sufficient supply of nutritious food to feed the world’s growing population. However, this requires a corresponding increase in the feed supply.
The feed of the future must be healthy and safe for the fish and ensure that the edible part of the farmed fish is healthy and safe to eat. Previously, feed for farmed fish was based on fishmeal and fish oil. However, the global supply of these ingredients is relatively stable, so in order to be able to meet the increasing need for fish feed, feed must be based on untraditional ingredients, for example ingredients of plant origin.
The need for alternative raw materials for fish feed is increasing, and NIFES contributes with knowledge about the nutrient requirements of fish and the upper tolerance levels for undesirable substances. This is important in order to be able to assess new raw materials and their suitability as raw materials for fish feed. NIFES is working on identifying new risks, for example from animal by-products and vegetable ingredients for fish feed.
