Bone health

Each year, 9000 adult Norwegians fracture their hip and 15 000 fracture their wrist. A large number also experience a vertebral fracture. Norway has the world’s highest incidence of female osteoporosis which costs the health service 2 billion Norwegian kroner annually. NIFES is carrying out research on the significance of seafood consumption for bone health.

Throughout life, the calcium in our bones is constantly replaced. When less calcium replaces the calcium that is lost our bones become weaker and more brittle and we are more exposed to fractures. Osteoporosis

is a skeletal disease which leads to a change in the structure of the bone tissue and reduced bone density. Persons with the early symptoms of osteoporosis are advised to take calcium and vitamin D supplements. Seafood is a good source of vitamin D, vitamin K and calcium.  NIFES is carrying out research to determine how vitamins D and K in fish, along with marine omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce the breakdown of bone and thus reduce osteoporosis in adult women.
